Introduction. The Samyang 85mm is manufactured by a Korean company who make optics of all types, for cameras, video cameras right down to the filters we use on the end of our lenses for various purposes. So a very experienced lens manufacture company although some say for the lower end of the market. The 85mm f1.4 retails for a little over 200 pounds in the Uk, so certainly not expensive. A comparable Canon or Nikon would be over 1000 Uk pounds. It is a manual focus prime lens and is ideal for portraiture and low light conditions.Suited to full frame and cropped sensors, giving approximately 127mm focal length on an APS-C. Build Quality. Is excellent considering the price paid. Its a well machined solid lens which oozes quality. The focus ring operates smoothly all the way in both directions and after much use has not worn or become loose. The aperture ring turns with a distinct yet light click .It is internal focusing (IF) so the front element does not extend or turn whilst using, a plus if using filters. Performance. This is a lens I cannot recommend highly enough. At first using a manual lens after so long seemed very strange, there is no aperture shown in your viewfinder or in the exif data recorded. When focusing live view is very helpful as considering the shallow depth of field at f1.4 your eyes may just not be good enough. Some newer models of camera have a peaking facility which outlines the area of sharp focus in selected colours, this is very useful. This lens takes incredible images, razor sharp and captures the full spectrum of colour faithfully. But more than that you will enjoy using it, as it teaches you so much more than you ever thought possible. You really start to learn how to use your camera, its functions and available light and surroundings. This is my favourite lens and makes me want to go out and take pictures.Bokeh(out of focus pattern) is wonderful. Just a little soft at f1.4 but after that its fine! It is available in Canon, KM / Sony A Mount, Pentax, 4/3 and Samsung NX mounts, and for the brave if you look on e bay you will find modification chips to enable your camera to display aperture and af confirmation, although that does take some of the fun away! Not suitable for fast action sport etc but for composed images such as portrait and landscape scenes.Excellent indoors in low lighting to avoid using flash.
